Welcome to the Fright Bites!

It's been some time since we had a Fright Radio Podcast but in that time away I thought about the show and it's format and that has led me to the Fright Bites!

The Fright Bites are just that, a bite sized portion of the once 2 hour long show. We want to spin you around the internet and highlight some of the haunt news that might go unseen. There is so much going on in the haunt community these days as well as the haunt industry and sometimes we miss some of those posts so it's my job to try and dig those up and bring them to you, the Frightners.

The shows will still have featured music, segments and a few new additions and you can constantly expect new updates and segments each and every time you tune in and with this newly shortened format we should be able to provide you with the Fright Bites on a more consistent basis.

Along with the Fright Radio Ezine which we feel is a great companion to the show there will be plenty to go around. So please enjoy the Fright Bites.
Hi Frightners!

Todays post is one that highlights a new prop build I see making the rounds more and more over the last few seasons and it is the Haunted Tree.

"Trees?" Why yes I did say trees! While the main focus is usually on tombstones of all kinds, creepy crypts and various ghouls and ghost haunted trees seem to be making the rounds and finding their place in more and more haunt displays every year.

The world of haunting has really come a long way since I first started to really get into it back in 2007-08. The attention to fine detail has grown significantly. Even though our displays are situated right on our front lawns or throughout our homes and garages we all strive to make everything in them as realistic as possible and this includes the trees!

Just think about it, most cemetery's have trees, every creepy picture of a haunted house usually has creepy old trees surrounding it's grounds and there is even the classic movie The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury. It only seems right that we incorporate trees into our designs. Trees add an extra dimension to your display. So many of our props lie low to the ground but building up and adding larger standing structures helps create a more impactful scene and greater overall depth which gives the patrons that come to your haunt more to look at other than what is lying on the ground before their feet.

"So how do I build myself a haunted tree?" Well that's easy....kind of...I guess haha! In all seriousness there are many ways you can approach your design and I will just run down three which each supply their own effectfulness.

I will start with the easiest and that is cardboad. Cardboard is probably the most cost effective material you could use to create trees for your haunt mostly because you can usually find it for free though if you have to buy it it can be had for just a few dollars usually from stores like Staples, Office Depot or almost any home office type store. The two basic ways you can fabricate cardboard into trees are both pretty simple. The first is by creating a flat standee. Simply lay the cardboard out, trace the desired shape of the tree and cut out with an exacto knife. Once you have your tree shape you can paint as desired, add a wood or PVC stake to the back of it an ta-da your done. The second way you could fabricate your cardboard tree will add more dimension too it and that is by cutting out 3-4 identical sides of the tree. You will only need 1 half of the tree that way the straight edge of each tree can meet the others in the middle and be attached together using either glue or tape then paint as desired. The second version will provide a better 360 view for your audience but both are suitable for use in the background of your haunt. Of course the downside to cardboard is its durability, any long spans of time outside being open to any inclement weather will most likely damage your cardboard tree though there are different thickness of cardboard available which may help. Bottom line with cardboard trees are they are quick and easy to create, adding in some hanging spanish moss, vines or a few dying leaves to them and even a few fake prop birds will give your haunt that extra dimension but these won't last you too long so if your looking for some longevity from your trees the next two sets of ideas are more for you.

The second option is one I have used in my own haunt and that are wooded trees. Now I won't go into too much detail here because there assembly is along the same lines as the cardboard trees though you will need to create solid support structures for them as these can be pretty heavy. I was lucky enough to score a few large sheets of plywood when I was having my roof re-shingled so I went with the flat silhouetted version of creating the trees. They came together fairly quickly though it took a little time to engineer the supports and ensure they would be stable and not fall over. Now I know not everyone has large pieces of plywood just lying around so this version of fabricating trees can actually be a bit more expensive and yes the trees will be heavy and fairly large so you must think about storage however you can leave these outside and store them outside if you have the room so the durability is there.

The last option is one I never really put any thought too until I started seeing it pop up the last two years and it's the one that got me thinking it was time to re-do my trees and of course create this post because I think the outcome of these trees once completed is great. So what is this magical new technique? Well it starts with Quik-Tube concrete forms. You might have walked past these forms while shopping at Lowes or Home Depot but never really gave them any thought much like myself but they actually work perfectly as the base form for your tree and at around $9-12 per tube they are fairly inexpensive. Now the techniques used with the tubes to form the tree vary. Some people choose to cover the tubes with greatstuff which acts as the tree bark, others use paper mache and then there is the technique of melting heavy duty plastic with a heat gun to form the bark. All of these techniques work fairly well and provide end results that make for a fantastic looking haunted tree! The tubes themselves also can provided you with a few extra cool effects. Because the tubes are hollow inside you can carve out a scary face into the tube and run lighting inside your tree and at night your evil face will glow very nicely. You could even choose to plum your tree with a hose hooked up to a fogger so that fog billows out of the trees face and mouth for a cool effect.
Haunted trees may not be at the top of your build list this October or even next but I do think they are very fun and easy builds that can add to your haunt and make it that much more unique and real. If you have built any of these style trees please feel free to share your techniques with us and pictures in the comments section below. Also while I don't know the makers of all the trees above I would like to give mention to: Mike Bachman & Eric Wilson who's haunted trees are shown under the concrete tube fabrication section. If you created or know the creators of the rest please make mention in the comments below so we can give the proper credit.
I wanted to take a moment and write about the Jersey Fest convention that I attended yesterday with my wife and daughter. Now I know some people may first say "Jersey Fest?" "What does that have to do with Halloween, haunting, or horror?" "Sounds like Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi should be playing there!" But I assure you Frightners, if you love horror and Halloween then this is a great little show to attend.

The show itself is held at The Marriot Hanover Hotel in New Jersey and spans three days the 28-30th. Being that it was only a 30 minute drive for me I figured it would be a good show to check out since I have never attended it before and the vendor list on-line looked very good.
The entire show floor took place in one large room though there were multiple rooms that were holding various classes and panel dicussions. There was a nice mix of both vendors selling various model kits and finished statues as well as many artist some of which you may know and others maybe not as well know but equally impressive.

Now personally I am not much of a model kit builder though in the Fright Radio issue one EZine my good friend Eric Vysther gave us the low down down on the world of kit building along with showing off some of his favorite works. I have to say I was intrigued by some of the kits I saw at the show. Some where box kits of various companies but there were vendors such as Starlighting Projects who were making their own kits and various pieces which you could purchase for use in any miniature diorama you may be building. Check out their site at starlightingprojects.com. I mean the stuff was great! They had various miniature flicker lanterns, flicker candles, illusion boxes and more. You could build a creep Frankenstein lab, Dracula's lair or really any creepy setting you could imagine. I didn't really have any thoughts of what to do with any of it at the moment I saw it but I'm sure interested in purchasing some of their items later down the line to create my own creepy miniature display.

As I mentioned above there were also a great number of artists at the show and meeting them and seeing their work was one of the top reasons I attended. Let's start with two of which you are probably most familiar with and they are Jordu Schell and Mikey Rotella. Most likely you know them from the show Making Monsters where both were special guest sculptors for Ed Edmunds of Distortions but both Jordu and Mikey have worked on countless other projects which there are too many to name. I was lucky enough to meet Mikey before I left and he was a lot of fun to talk to. Both he and Jordu were very busy throughout the day teaching various classes which I will get too in a bit. I unfortunately did not get to speak with Jordu because of his class schedule but I did get to see his work on display at his and Mikey's table and as always it is very impressive. He is currently working on a line of lifelike busts. I believe there were 4-5 on display and they were simply amazing. Mikey also had some of his works on display and for sale. I am personally a fan of his sculpting style. One mini bust he had which was named "Fat Zombie" was pretty cool!

Directly next to Mikey & Jordu's table was the table consisting of George Troester, Linday Gavin, Jake Corrick, Ben Bayouth, Brett Guerra, and Chaz Vance. You may know some of them from both Faceoff and Jim Hensons Creature Shop. Their table was full of pieces by each artist and we were lucky enough to see George do a makeup demo on Linday while we were there. They were all very welcoming and took the time to talk, share what they have been up to and answer any questions we had and I have to say that along with Mikey everyone was super nice to my daughter Harper who is just 3 years old. George even let her behind the table to watch as he applied the makeup to Linday. For my wife and I this was special because it really made the day. Some people don't understand the impression they can leave on a young child but knowing that Harper showed interest in the monsters and makeup they all provided her with memories that hopefully one day she can recall as reasons why she too took to art and the crazy world of monsters! I mean hey, when the real R2-D2 is rolling around and your daughter says the monster makeup was the coolest part of the show that's something to be proud of!

We did meet many other artists like Karl Libecap of Monster Dork Studios, the folks of Wayward Leather Design and a friend of mine Brian Dunn of Alter Ego Dezines who's booth really looked great! Overall there was plenty too see and be inspired by at this show.

Along with the vendor and artist floor Jersey Fest also offers a wide variety of workshops which you may attend throughout the day. While we did not attend any I will say that what was offered on paper sounded very interesting. Most time when you attend a show such as this you just get one show floor with the vendors selling there goods but to have classes and various demos going on was a nice added bonus here and the people leading and doing the demos were all very knowledgeable. There were classes focused on sculpting and casting, panels discussing the FX industry and others based on model kit building. All really catered to all aspects of what the show itself was all about.

I think Jersey Fest has room to grow but what they currently offer is pretty great for the price of entry and worth checking out if you haven't already. I know I will be headed back for the next one!
I wanted to take a minute to call attention to two different events going on this weekend August 29th & 30th.
First up is The Morbid Anatomy Flea Market at the Bell House in Brooklyn NY.http://www.thebellhouseny.com/event/905665-morbid-anatomy-flea-market-brooklyn/
The Flea is open on Sunday at 12PM and ends at 9PM. Entrance is is $1. This is a unique flea market as you can tell by the name. Vendors at the show will have everything from Taxidermy, bones, unusual antiques, obscure books, and assorted curiosities.
As a haunter and a lover of all things macabre I think this show will be a bunch of fun and I am sure there will be some great finds for use in a haunt or even as a display piece for your home.
Also if you are a follower of the show Oddities on the Science Channel then Ryan Matthew Cohn will also be present with two tables of osteology and antiquities. If you have seen any of his work like his exploded skulls that have been featured on a few occasions on the show then you know it's some pretty amazing stuff.
The second show is the Jersey Fest Model Kit & Statue Fair. If you are an enthusiast or collector of model making kits, statues, replica props or fine art then you will want to check this fair out located a the Hanover Hotel. http://jerseyfestfair.com
Not only do they have a show floor with a large list of vendors but they also offer hobby classes and workshops to help you with some tips and tricks. Some of the classes include Miniature Figure Model painting, Smooth on Applications, Painting life sized Monsters and even a sculpting class by Jordu Schell from the hit show we all know and love Making Monsters. Also attending the show from Making Monsters is Mikey Rotella among many other very talented artists.
Being that we all have begun venturing into the world of sculpting, molding and casting and painting I think this is a show well worth making it out too even if it is simply for inspiration.
I myself and am hopefully headed to Jersey Fest as I would love to meet up with Jordu again and have the opportunity to talk with both him and Mikey and I think the art that will be on display is just too good to pass up but overall these are two shows that look like a lot of fun for those of us in the NJ/NY/PA area. If I go I will definitely take a lot of pictures and try to get a post up next week with a review.
Happy haunting Frightners!
Frightguy.

I am happy to present our second issue of the Fright Radio E-Zine to you today!
This issue focuses partly on the Disneyworld Haunted Mansion with features such as The Return of the Hatbox Ghost (in the Disneyland HM) My return visit review of the HM and various crafty HM treats you can by for yourself or any HM fanatic friends you may have.
We also have some great articles by great Home/Professional Haunters such as Melissa "Hauntzilla" Winton of Terror on the Hill and The Deadzone as well as Brandi Bush of Goathead Hollow.
To top it all off is the new face of Fear Father Evil himself in his closing Sermon!
Putting this and the first issue together has been fun as there is plenty for the Haunt and Horror fanatic to dive into in both issues.
4 more issues remain in our first run with the next slated for the end of September/beginning of October along with 6 new episodes of the recorded podcast still yet to air so plenty of work to still be done but we appreciate all of the Frightners patience and hope you enjoy this newest release by Fright Radio.
As you can tell by the lack of posts these past few months Fright Radio has been in deep hibernation. REAL DEEP! Like Han Solo Hibernation deep!

I personally had to step back and take a look at the show as a whole and figure out where I really wanted to go with it as there are already so many great Halloween and Haunt related podcasts and publications out there that provide great information on the industry.

I needed to take some time to think about "if it were me what would I want to listen to, what would I want to talk about?"Now don't get me wrong, I love the content we were providing and we had so many awesome contributors that were producing some great segments that I was super excited to share with our listeners but personally I didn't feel fulfilled and that is bad when your only 6 or 7 shows in to what you had planned to keep going for some time. I didn't want to just close up shop or waste the time of the people who were helping me create the show because that is simply not fair to anyone so I figured it was best to hit the pause button and truly think about what Fright meant to me and pick a path for it to continue to go. Once those questions got answered and I found a solution that worked I would continue to soldier on with the best show I could provide.

Now obviously I didn't want to stop talking about haunting, halloween or horror because it's a part of me and what I love to do so as I delved deeper into that passion the word lifestyle came to mind. As a haunter and Halloween enthusiast I feel that my love for the holiday and for haunting doesn't just start and end every October, it's year round and goes hand in hand with my daily living and I assume this goes for every Haunter out there.

We live, eat, breath and love Halloween. From the clothes we wear, the decor we decorate our homes with to the very food we eat and drink, it's all about Halloween. I know haunters who have haunt shirts, one for almost every day of the week! There are haunters whom I know who continue to strive to find an try the latest pumpkin ales. Some who love © Haunted Hot Sauces for their food, or need © Deadly Grounds which a haunt themed coffee to help jump start their days. Some of us love collecting horror and Halloween themed toys, art, sculptures, etc. The point is is that it consumes us. We search for it, we live it every day.

It's the lifestyle of haunting that I personally love and the art, design and culture of it fully interests me to it's very core and that is where the focus of Fright Radio will turn. We will strive to to dig into the culture of haunting and bring our findings to the masses and how we intend on doing that is what comes next but when?!!

We do have a plan in place and will start rolling that plan out shortly. This blog is a big part of that as is the radio show which will re-debut soon and will focus on the culture of haunting featuring art, design, collectibles and more.

It's a new adventure and one we intend on staying true too but of course we understand that the proof is in the pudding right?! So let us prove it to you, the listeners, the Frightners!

I will have another post coming soon that will contain something really fun to help drive our content so please continue to check in here the :Fright Radio Facebook Group Page

We will be back very soon and ready to roll on a brand new adventure in haunting!

I just wanted to post a link to Haunt Nations mention of our partnership on their webpage.
HAUNT NATION MAG ARTICLE

There is some new news to all of this as well and that is that Fright Radio will be submitting an article to the Haunt Nation Magazine for each of their issues and Haunt Nation will be contributing a segment to our show.

Fright Radio will be putting out a mini episode in January but won't be back with a full episode until February. We want to work on our website which we hope to launch in February with our return.

It's our goal to have all of our content, show downloads, blog news and updates and our store all in one central location for you. This of course will be helpful for us leading up to Transworld which FR aims to attend. We aren't sure if our full Fright Team will be at Transworld but Ghoulish Cop should be headed there with the Radio Reaper and of course we will be meeting up with Gary Berger of Haunt Nation.

It should be an interesting roller coster of a ride as we continue on but I am looking forward to it and hope you are too!

First let me say I hope all your holidays were spooktacular! Speaking of spooktacular! Did you hear? Fright Radio has a Holiday Spooktacular show out : http://frightradio.podomatic.com

It's a great show filled with holiday goodies gorelore and a great interview with Craigh Shriber AKA Devils Chariot II had so much fun talking with Craig and learning about what makes his haunts tick so I do hope you will enjoy this one.

This caps off our third episode and I really feel we are gaining steam with so much more in store for the news year which leads me into the news I would like to share with this post and that is our BIG ANNOUNCMENT! Well it's big to us here at Fright Radio.

We are officially partnering with Haunt Nation Magazine to further help spread the fear! Gary Berger and I have been talking and we really feel we can benefit from one another. Both our show and his eZine will be able to share content with one another and hopefully continue to reach out to more and more listeners and viewers of both. We share a common goal and the is to give back to our awesome haunt community! It's our love for everything Halloween that we want to share with all you hard working haunters and halloween fanatics out there so I think I can speak for Gary too when I say we appreciate your continued support of what we both do and hope this partnership helps to continue to give you the content you crave!

The new year has a lot in store for Fright Radio. If all goes according to plan we will be attending Transworld this year to bring you a show live from the show floor, we also are hoping to launch the Fright Radio website where you will be able to download the shows directly, shop our Fright Radio store for T-Shirts and other haunt related apparel and goodies and receive any news updates that we may have.

So again, we hope you had a very merry chirstmas and happy holidays and we can't wait to continue to provide you that special Fear for your Ear!
